Weird as Wonderland
Set in the historical Square Tower in Old Portsmouth, Weird as Wonderland; Alice’s Rehab, was a drama performance produced by Pompey Sports and Education Foundation Respect Programme and acted by young people aged between 12 and 19 from the local community. Kiri Grant, director and facilitator of the production, commented, ‘Weird as Wonderland was inspired by a mash up of different versions of the classic ‘Alice in Wonderland’. I wanted to look at the after effects of a young girl that experienced a world of madness created by Lewis Carroll. The production looked at the dark side of Alice in Wonderland, and along with the setting of the Square, we produced a story that pushed the boundaries’.
Over a period of 5 months the young people, some of whom had never acted before, attended rehearsals to prepare for their parts and to help create the Weird as Wonderland performance into what it is today. All the young people were involved in writing their own scripts and had input on how they acted the different parts. They were supported by Kiri Grant (Director), Gemma Charles (Volunteer), Liz Weston (New Theatre Royal), and Richie Maclaren from PSEF Respect Programme. George Bailey, 16, started out working backstage before being encouraged to take a role in the performance. He said: ‘My involvement in production at first was just to make flyers, poster, music and I was pleased that I didn’t have a role in the production. As weeks went on I was told I would be narrating throughout the whole production, which I wasn’t too pleased about, but I just got on with it. On the night of the performance Kiri walked me through what I would be doing and what I would be saying. This was the first time I had performed in front of a crowd and was extremely nervous. When it was all over I was pleased with what I had done and the feedback I got from people was great. I had surprised a lot of people, including myself, and I my confidence grew in the sense of performing’.
Weird as Wonderland; Alice’s Rehab, took place on Friday 3rd February and was performed for city leaders, teachers, journalists, arts leaders and friends and family. Amazing both the audience and themselves the play was brilliantly received and calls for a repeat performance were heard from the audience. After the success of Weird as Wonderland the PSEF Respect Programme has been requested to repeat the performance again at the New Theatre Royal’s festival ‘The Lost Hour’ on Saturday 24th March.

Fencathon
Portsmouth Sports and Education Foundation’s Respect Programme worked in partnership with Academie’ D Escrime to deliver a 24 hour Fencathon held at The John Pounds centre. This was a fundraising event where 27 young people from both The Respect Programme and Academie ‘D Escrime participated in 12 hours of Non- Stop Fencing and then a sleepover. The young people had full use of all the facilities throughout the day and played football, basketball, worked out in the Gym and used the I.T suite. This was a fun, action packed 24 hours which was successfully completed by all the young people involved.

National Citizen Service Success!

The young people who took part in the National Citizen Service programme during this summer presented Stamshaw Venture with a cheque for £500 after fundraising as part of their NCS experience. NCS offers young people the chance to engage in their local communities and work to improve their local areas. The project backed by the Royal Navy & Catch22 has been a huge success.
Look out for next years NCS experience in early 2012!

The NCS also made their very own website to help young people get information on events and activities available to them across the city.

KICKZ Cup 2011
The Kickz cup 2011 was a huge success with the young people that were involved. The young people had a fantastic opportunity to play competitive football at some of the best professional football pitches in the country. The Portsmouth Kickz programme fully supported the regional and national tournaments and managed to enter a team in every aged category.

The photo above is a photo of the Portsmouth under 14's and under 16's girl’s teams, it was a first tournament for some of the girls in the photo and they represented the Kickz programme really well with the right attitude and fair play.

The Kickz Cup is not only a great experience for all involved but it also gives young people an opportunity to break down any barriers between rival clubs or other projects. the girls from Portsmouth made some good friendships with the girls from Liverpool and showed good support when each side were playing matches.

On Friday 3rd June the individuals above were given the opportunity to take part in a national tournament at the Madejski Stadium, home of Reading football Club which were they would play and compete for the Kickz Cup 2011. Many teams from all over the south of the country turned up to play in the tournament such as Brighton, Plymouth, Southampton, Watford, Brentford and the hosts of the day Reading.

It was a first tournament for some of the under 14’s but they were all just as motivated to play as their team mates who had experienced playing at such a big venue last year. Jack Hagstrom, the under 14’s captain has previously been in the kickz tournament in 2009 at Readings training ground but his team sadly lost in the finals.
